The original chapel for cremation services has been reworked as the office and book of remembrance rooms as expansion was not an option due to existing graves.Original Victorian West Cemetery Chapel will remain in use for services prior to burial, in one of the three sites in the town.
An extra 66 parking places have been created as a result of the development in adjacent land to the original site, with a single storey double height space for a multi faith chapel, which has full height windows giving a feeling of light and space and making the connection with the shades of green and light oak in the chapel allowing families celebrating the life of their loved one, in a dignified manner, with beautifully landscaped grounds as the focal point and the view from the windows.
The site has been preserved in a wonderful way, allowing the history of the cemetery, which was built in 1858, with prominent figures from Darlington’s past to be recognised, such as James Piggott Pritchett, architect of buildings including Darlington Trainee College, and Francis Mewburn, the worlds first railway solicitor and legal brains behind the Stockton to Darlington Railway.
