Northumberland Woodland Burials at Brockenfield near Morpeth in Northumberland. The building of the 80 seat crematorium is a significant development with Woodland Burials becoming Northumberland’s only private crematorium. Northumberland Woodland Burials was established in 2002 and is on a 38 acre site where burials are marked with a plaque or living tree.
Treske worked with Laura and Scott Clarehugh to design the ceremony hall furniture to reflect the natural calmness of the woodland setting. The bespoke lectern has marble panels encased in an anthracite metal frame to mirror the architecture of the door and window frames.
Treske designed curved sofas for the family seating and oak chairs with colour coordinated seat upholstery provided for the rest of the chapel. The chairs are set out in a soft curve to allow friends and family to gently surround the restored bier, carrying the coffin.
A movable tabletop cross made from spalted beech was also made for the hall to reflect the woodland setting and marbling of the lectern.
The crematorium was officially opened in October 2022 by the Duchess of Northumberland and was followed by open days for bereavement professionals. The new crematoria is restricted to five services per day to give each visiting set of mourners time and privacy. The Woodland Burial site is often used by people whose friends and relatives are at rest for peaceful walks.

Treske designed and manufactured an oak rise and fall catafalque and installed large triangular voile curtains in the gable end of the hall above the catafalque, inspired by yacht sails and Poole’s coastal heritage. Dress curtains in marine blue velvet complement 100 aquamarine upholstered Treske Harrogate chairs.
