Construction of a new crematorium at Bunkers Park in Hemel Hempstead is now complete. It has shared access with the Cemetery on the same site. The new facility is a sister site to the current West Herts Crematorium in Garston, Watford and has been developed to provide additional capacity in the West Hertfordshire region.
The new crematorium will enhance the quality of service provided to bereaved families by increasing service times from 40 to 60 minutes so there is more time for individual ceremonies. The chapel is designed to seat 136 mourners and standing room for up to 115 mourners. There is parking for up to 140 cars plus overflow for another 30 cars if needed. There is an area for cremated remains memorials in the grounds, to allow families somewhere to grieve after the funeral service.
The crematorium is being delivered by the West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, which includes representatives from Dacorum, Watford, Three Rivers, St Albans, and Hertsmere councils. The Joint Committee currently oversees the management and the operation of the existing crematorium in Garston and will also manage the new facility.
