The Church of the Ascension is in Lower Broughton in Salford about 3 miles from the centre of Manchester. The predominantly brick church was built in 1869 and had been restored in 2013 before a tragic arson attack in 2017 almost totally destroyed the Grade 2 listed building. The fire was tackled by the fire service using six fire engines, made more difficult and destructive by the fire melting gas pipes inside the building with the resulting gas explosion causing further damage.
The Church of the Ascension is a focal point for the community which has undergone three redevelopments since the 1960s seeing many changes in this mixed cultural area.
Treske was asked by the Church of the Ascension and Buttress Architects to design and make replacement seating and liturgical furniture for the church as part of the complete reorder.
Seating for the congregation consisted of Treske stacking benches and further overflow seating using the Howe 40/4 wooden seat and frame chair. Bespoke altar, font, lectern, celebrant chairs and lightweight portable readers were made as well as seating for the choir. Pascal and processional candle stands were also designed and made for the church.
Major good fortune enables Holy Trinity to undertake a complete reorder, including sanctuary, choir and nave furniture from Treske.
A full set of Sanctuary furniture including an altar, credence table, lecterns, choir stalls and clergy desks and other dignitary seating were designed and made by Treske for Manchester Cathedral.
Seating, tabernacle and credence table stand, altar and celebrants seating and readers for the Bishop of Bristol's private chapel.
