Stockton Crematorium - Stockton on Tees Borough Council
Treske Ltd were awarded the contract by Stockton on Tees Borough Council to supply the crematoria furniture and soft furnishings with all items specifically designed and made by Treske for Stockton Crematorium. The bespoke crematoria furniture brief included bench seating and freestanding furniture for the two chapels, for two waiting rooms, reception desk and Book of Remembrance cabinets, ensuring cohesive quality throughout the entire crematorium. Two family rooms are furnished with purpose made fully upholstered benches, with corner tables also designed as part of the brief.
From the beginning of the project Treske worked closely with the Council team & Architects to ensure a seamless installation of the crematoria furniture, committal tracks and curtains. Treske planned carefully for all types of funerals in each chapel with the addition of a sheer voile curtain to run around the catafalque. The voile curtains allow for a more contemporary committal at the end of each service by closing the voile, diming the lights and silhouetting the coffin. The fully lined committal curtains in both chapels give a more traditional end to a service.
Commissioned by Stockton on Tees Borough Council, this new crematorium building was constructed on the site of a former school playing field.
Esh Construction were appointed to build this state-of-the-crematoria facility, with work starting in June 2018. The plans were for a modern single storey building with two chapels with ample parking, surrounded by attractive landscaped gardens of remembrance with a stand-alone building housing book of remembrance cabinets.
Cllr Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Over the last six years 80 percent of bereaved families in the Borough opted for cremation rather than burial for their loved ones. By providing a local crematorium facility we can meet the needs of our bereaved families here in their own community.”
Maplewood Chapel is the larger of the two chapels seating 120. The chapel has an emphasis on light and space with darker crematorium furniture contrasting with the lighter floor and walls. Furnished to the highest standard, the beautiful curved benches and a completely bespoke pedestal catafalque, combine to create and foster an atmosphere of respect and tranquillity.
Bluebell Chapel is a more intimate setting, with bench seating for 50. The chapel shares the same strong white linear architecture as Maplewood, softened by the contrasting dark stained oak bespoke furniture. The soft curves of the bespoke catafalque are reflected in the other furniture designs created for Stockton crematorium with flower stands, lecterns and console tables sharing a subtle organic shape. The integrated crematorium AV system is seamlessly incorporated with a microphone and display screen set into the lectern reader top and a bass sub-woofer concealed inside the catafalque.
This crematorium has been designed with simplicity and ease of access in mind, giving the local community a modern and tranquil building to say goodbye to loved ones.
