Christ Church opened in 1798 in the fashionable city of Bath as a place where the poor could attend church using the ground floor, rather than having to pay pew rent as was the norm for the other local churches. Support for this scheme on Julian Road came from many influential figures, amongst them being William Wilberforce. As a result of its founding philosophy, the church draws its congregation from a wide area rather than having a geographically defined area of responsibility.
Improvements to the church are ongoing with Treske becoming part of the project to reorder the furniture and reorganise the chancel. Treske were selected to design and make the new choir and sanctuary furniture. Working closely with the church Treske designed choir seating and readers for 24 choir members, the choir master’s music stand, as well as an altar, credence table, lectern and celebrants’ chairs and readers. Treske also designed and installed four removable altar rails.
